Overwhelmed vs Overloaded - What’s Your Word?
In the fast-paced world of entrepreneurship, both men and women experience the pressures of running a business, but the way they describe their feelings during peak stress often differs.
Women tend to say they are "overwhelmed," while men more commonly describe themselves as "overloaded." This distinction is not just about semantics; it reflects deeper psychological and social differences.
Overloaded: When someone says they are overloaded, it typically implies that they are dealing with a high volume of tasks or responsibilities.
This term suggests a challenge of capacity—too much to do, but with the implication that if they could just manage or distribute the load better, they could handle it. Overloaded often refers to a practical or logistical issue, such as having too many emails, meetings, or deadlines.
Overwhelmed: On the other hand, feeling overwhelmed goes beyond just having too much on one's plate. It speaks to an emotional response where the person feels they are losing control or are being engulfed by their responsibilities.
Women may more often use this term because societal expectations often place them in roles where they are expected to manage not just business but also family, relationships, and personal well-being. This multidimensional pressure can create a sense of being overwhelmed, where the emotional and mental toll becomes as significant as the workload itself.
Why the Gender Difference?
Social Conditioning? Women are often socially conditioned to be more attuned to their emotions and the emotions of others, which can lead them to internalize stress differently.
Feeling overwhelmed can stem from the perceived need to meet the expectations of being a nurturing partner, a dedicated business owner, and a supportive friend, all while managing their own well-being.
Multitasking vs. Task Management? While men may feel "overloaded" as they tackle a list of tasks, women might feel "overwhelmed" by the need to juggle various roles simultaneously.
The difference in how these responsibilities are managed or perceived can contribute to the language used to describe the experience.
Emotional Labor? Women often carry a heavier load of emotional labor, which involves managing not only their emotions but also the emotions of those around them.
This additional layer of responsibility can lead to a feeling of being overwhelmed, as it encompasses more than just the physical tasks at hand.
Understanding the Impact
Recognizing these differences is crucial in addressing the unique challenges faced by women entrepreneurs. While the feeling of being overloaded can often be tackled with better task management strategies, feeling overwhelmed may require a more holistic approach, addressing emotional well-being, support systems, and the societal pressures that contribute to this state.
It's essential for women entrepreneurs to identify whether they are feeling overloaded or overwhelmed. Understanding the root of these feelings can help in finding effective solutions. Consider joining communities, seeking mentorship, or exploring programs like the Crossroads Clarity Solution to help navigate these challenges.
One of my mentors told me, “We don’t have a professional life and a personal life. We have one whole life.” Profoundly wise - but frequently forgotten by (overwhelmed) women business owners.

“Finally, I found a coach who understands the reality of a woman business owner of ‘a certain age’ and all the complexities of running a 7-figure business, with many interests, and living with a body that’s changing in inconvenient ways!”

"While in the exploratory stage of my new business idea, Isabel graciously provided me with important questions to consider, next steps for moving forward, and a healthy dose of much appreciated encouragement.
She also reminded me that what matters most is to listen to the client and then find a solution for what they need. Not surprisingly, that’s exactly what her consultation did for me.”
